This park was recently re-constructed in 2010 due to its former deteriorated condition. Of major concern to area residents and to the Friends of Charlton-Thompson Garden Preservation committee and the National Association of Black Veterans in Bronx County, is the fact that the park has been the subject of vandalism and graffiti, which have affected the integrity of this memorial for two of our nation's war heroes.

However, the lack of a permanent or retractable covering over the stage poses a significant limitation, especially in inclement weather. We propose constructing a permanent or retractable covering for the amphitheater stage to enhance its functionality and ensure uninterrupted use during special events. A stage covering would shield performers, speakers, and attendees from exposure to intense sunlight, heavy rain, or snow, allowing events to continue comfortably and safely. This addition would be particularly valuable during the summer months when the sun can be intense, as well as during unexpected weather changes that could otherwise disrupt events. By incorporating heating and cooling features, the covering can create a climate-controlled environment, extending the amphitheater's usability across seasons. Such features would allow the space to be used more frequently, promoting year-round programming that is currently limited by seasonal temperature extremes.
